Research Statement
We are interested in applying the synchrotron- and neutron-based scattering and diffraction techniques, as well as high-pressure methods to studying the structures, dynamics and phase transitions of lyotropic liquid crystals and of biological soft matter. We aim to explore how the function of matter is correlated with its structure and dynamics. This knowledge will not only advance our understanding towards the matter but also facilitate fabricating materials with desirable properties. Currently, our research interests include:
  1. Mechanisms of the Phase Behavior Exhibited by Electrically Charged Phospholipids and Other Lyotropic Liquid Crystals
  2. Correlations Between the Mechanical and Dynamical Properties of Lipid Membranes
  3. Development of the High-Pressure Cryocooling Technique for Protein Crystals and of Other Scientific Instruments
  4. Structual and Dynamical Studies of the Interactions Between Water and Biological Soft Matter
  5. Application of Neutron-based Scattering Techniques to Studies of Biology and Materials Systems
We welcom graduate and undergraduate students who enjoy conducting experimental science and instrumentation. We also seek potential collaborators who are interested in structurally and dynamically characterizing their biology and materials systems.
