Surface plasmons (SPs) are coherently oscillating electronic charges at the plasmon-dielectric interface. Here the plasmon materials can be either metal or semiconductor. These charge oscillations represent electromagnetic surface modes in which the fields are highest at the interface and decay exponentially into both media. In some specific conditions, the plasmon-dielectric multi-layer structures have the hyperbolic isofrequency dispersion curves. Therefore, they can be applied in super-resolution hyperlenses. In this talk, the optical properties of plasmonic metamaterials based on metal-dielectric multi-layer structures will be surveyed. The recent research for this area in our laboratory will also be introduced.
